Lesson 08 · Tools & data

Charting tools & analysis workflow

By Robin CB · AI market analyst & investor

TradingView is the default charting platform — but free standalone TradingView is no longer a live intraday tool for NSE. The broker-integrated route is the fix, and it costs nothing. This lesson compares the tools honestly, with weaknesses alongside strengths.

TradingView — the default charting platform

TradingView covers NSE, BSE, MCX, forex, and global markets in one login, with 100+ built-in indicators, drawing tools, screeners, and the Pine Script language for custom work. It is the charting standard most Indian traders use, either directly or embedded inside their broker's platform.

Pricing (verified on tradingview.com/pricing, crawled 30 Oct 2026)

USD prices are from TradingView's own pricing page. "Billed annually" means the monthly equivalent; the full annual amount is charged upfront. A 30-day free trial is offered on paid plans (14 days on Ultimate, per secondary reporting). Sales tax may be added depending on location.

PlanMonthly billingBilled annually (per month)Annual total
Basic (free)$0$0$0
Essential$14.95$12.95$155.40
Plus$34.95$29.95$359.40
Premium$69.95$59.95$719.40
Ultimate$239.95$199.95$2,399.40

INR pricing is UNVERIFIED/conflicting: secondary sources report ₹1,295/₹2,595/₹5,095 per month (monthly billing) and ₹995/₹2,095/₹4,195 per month (annual billing) for Essential/Plus/Premium, while other sources report different annual equivalents. TradingView shows region-dependent pricing at checkout — confirm the exact INR figure on the checkout page; do not rely on any single quoted INR price.

Notes: the official page's checkmark grid did not extract cleanly for every row; the table combines the page's explicit numbers with secondary sources that agree. "Saved layouts 10+" for Premium/Ultimate reflects the page showing 1/5/10 with higher tiers unenumerated — treat the exact Premium/Ultimate layout count as UNVERIFIED. Pine Script computation time limits: 20s (Basic), 40s (Essential/Plus/Premium), 100s (Ultimate).

The NSE data catch (important, changed ~September 2026)

TradingView's own data-coverage page lists NSE India: delayed data free (15 min); real-time included in paid plans. BSE real-time is a $5/month add-on. Around September 2026, free-plan users began reporting 15-minute delayed NSE data where real-time had previously been available. Practical consequences: free standalone TradingView is NOT a live intraday tool for NSE in late 2026 — a 15-minute delay kills scalping and tight intraday work. Paid plans include real-time NSE data. Broker connections restore real-time data free: connecting a Dhan (or Zerodha) account to TradingView gives real-time NSE/BSE data without a TradingView subscription (reported by Dhan's community forum, Sept 2026). This is the single biggest free-stack unlock.

Pine Script basics

Pine Script (v6, current since late 2024) is TradingView's built-in language for custom indicators and strategies. It can build custom indicators and strategies (code entry/exit rules, run them over history, get a performance report), fire alerts from any condition, and access a 100,000+ script community library — most common ideas already exist for free; read the code before trusting a script. It cannot place real orders by itself — execution needs a webhook (paid plans) to an external service, or a broker integration. A Pine strategy's backtest is not evidence of profitability — the same honesty rules from Lesson 05 apply (costs, look-ahead, out-of-sample). Pine Script editor access is available on all plans including free. A worked Pine Script example — an ATR position-size calculator — is on the Tools page.

Paper trading and mobile

Paper trading is available on every plan, including free: a simulated account on live charts, with order placement from the chart, position tracking, and P&L. It is the fastest way to practise execution mechanics. Limits: fills are simulated at chart prices (no slippage/partial-fill realism), and it does not reproduce the psychological pressure of real money. Use it for mechanics and rule-following practice, not as proof a strategy works.

TradingView's iOS/Android apps sync layouts, watchlists, alerts, and drawings with desktop, with native push alert notifications and home-screen widgets. Limits vs desktop: fewer charts per screen, no multi-monitor layouts, Pine Editor is usable but cramped. Good for monitoring alerts and checking positions; analysis and strategy work belong on desktop.

Broker charting in India — free with an account

Every major Indian broker now embeds TradingView or ChartIQ charts. For a cost-conscious trader, the broker platform is the free real-time charting stack — the broker pays the data licence; you pay only brokerage per trade (typically ₹20/order for intraday/F&O, ₹0 for delivery; verify on the broker's charges page).

BrokerChartingStandout featuresWatch-outs
Zerodha KiteTradingView + ChartIQ, switchable; Trade-from-Charts (TFC) on bothLargest broker; TFC places/modifies orders from the chart; up to 10 saved layouts on app; no reported indicator cap on its TradingView chartsSensibull Pro historically paid for non-free tiers; Kite Connect API pricing — see Lesson 05; support is ticket-based

Upstox ProTradingView charts + Chart 360100+ indicators; option-chain analytics; GTT orders; fast mobile executionTradingView integration described as "partial" in comparisons; some advanced tools need upgrades; API v2 free
Angel OneTradingView chartsResearch + ARQ Prime insights; SmartAPI for automation; broad product rangePromotional pricing changes; research quality varies; delivery brokerage ₹20 or 0.1% after intro offer (verify)
FyersTradingView charts nativelyClean, trader-focused web terminal; free API; direct-from-chart tradingSmaller client base; research/support thinner than Angel One

Data quality/latency: broker charts use the broker's own exchange data feed — real-time by definition while logged in, with latency comparable across brokers for retail use. The practical differences are uptime during volatile opens (all brokers have had outage days) and depth of market data (Dhan's 20-level depth vs the standard 5-level view elsewhere). Do not judge a broker by charting alone: reliability, order types (GTT, iceberg, cover), and support matter more on the days that cost money.

NRI note (31 Oct 2026): Dhan does not offer NRI accounts (its own Terms: "only available to residents in India… not available to foreign residents including NRIs"; FAQ confirms NRIs cannot open accounts). For Bahrain-based NRIs, the free-stack broker is Zerodha Kite, which does onboard NRIs. See the Tools page for the NRI-corrected stack.

Screener workflow that works: Screener.in (fundamentals: ROCE, debt, cash flow) → shortlist 10–20 names → TradingView/broker charts (technicals: trend, volume, levels) → 3–5 names → position-size and journal. Screening is a filter, not a signal — a screen passing is the start of research, not a buy decision.

Honest note: F&O analytics tools make complex positions legible; they do not make them profitable. SEBI's base rates (Lesson 02: 87.7% of individual F&O traders lost money in FY26) apply to tool users too. Buy the tool for risk visibility (Greeks, payoff, IV), never for "signals".

Data & news workflow — the morning routine

Primary sources first; aggregators second. All times IST; Bahrain is IST − 2:30.

  1. Overnight (before 06:45 Bahrain / 09:15 IST open): GIFT Nifty indication, US close, Brent/crude, USD–INR, SGX cues; TradingView economic calendar for the day's events (RBI, FOMC, CPI releases).
  2. Exchange ground truth: NSE India — market timings page, option chain, bulk/block deals, FII/DII activity, holiday calendar (Muhurat Trading 8 Nov 2026; 15 equity trading holidays in 2026). BSE announcements for company news. MCX for commodity timings and prices.
  3. Bhavcopy (free EOD data): NSE's All Reports page publishes daily bhavcopy files — the ground-truth dataset every Indian data product is built from (Lesson 05). Download, don't scrape: NSE's Terms of Use prohibit scraping/harvesting.
  4. Regulator announcements: RBI press releases — MPC meeting calendar 2026-27: 6–8 Apr, 3–5 Jun, 3–5 Aug, 5–7 Oct 2026, 2–4 Dec 2026, 3–5 Feb 2027; the 7 Oct 2026 decision raised repo to 5.50%. SEBI circulars for rule changes that alter margins, expiry, or algo requirements.
  5. Company news: exchange announcements first, then Screener.in concall notes and results; treat business-media headlines as leads to verify, not facts.
  6. End of day: update the journal (rule-following rate first), review FII/DII and OI data for context, set next-day alerts.

A workable 15-minute routine: overnight cues (3 min) → calendar + RBI/SEBI check (3 min) → watchlist charts, daily + 1H (6 min) → alerts set, journal note (3 min).

Alerts & automation — and the hard constraint

TradingView alerts (price, indicator, drawing, strategy, watchlist; multi-condition on paid plans) are server-side: they fire whether or not your browser is open, delivered by push, email, or webhook. Webhook alerts require a paid plan (Essential and above, widely reported) and two-factor authentication. A webhook POSTs JSON to any URL — the standard bridge to execution bots or a self-hosted server that calls a broker API.

The constraint (Lesson 05, binding): SEBI's retail algo-trading framework is mandatory since 1 April 2026 — registered static IP, exchange Algo ID, 10 orders/second registration threshold, broker accountability, 5-year audit trail. Alerts that notify you are fine; alerts that place orders automatically through a webhook + broker API are algo trading and need the registered route through your broker. Do not wire TradingView webhooks to live order placement without confirming your broker's algo-registration process. The safe progression is: alerts → manual execution with a written checklist → paper-tested automation → registered algo route only. Broker-native alerts are the free alternative: GTT orders (Good Till Triggered) on Zerodha/Dhan/Upstox act as price alerts that place the order for you, inside the broker's own compliant system — no webhook, no algo registration question, and they survive app closure.

Mobile setup — charting on the go

Recommended stacks and the multi-timeframe setup

Free stack — ₹0/month (plus ₹20/order brokerage only when trading)

  1. Dhan account (reported: free account opening, zero AMC, ₹0 delivery) → real-time TradingView charts at tv.dhan.co with Pine Editor, Bar Replay, 100+ indicators, 20-level depth, free API. NRI exception: use Zerodha Kite instead — see the Tools page.
  2. Screener.in free for fundamental screening.
  3. NSE/BSE official sites for option chain, deals, FII/DII, announcements.
  4. GoCharting free tier (reported Sept 2026: real-time NSE + MCX data free for logged-in users) for order-flow/footprint charts — verify the free-data claim still holds.
  5. Broker GTT orders instead of paid alert tiers.

Total: ₹0/month fixed cost. Its real limits: advanced TradingView features (second-based intervals, volume footprint on TradingView itself, 400 alerts) stay paid.

Sensible paid stack — for a committed active trader

  1. TradingView Essential, billed annually: $12.95/month (~₹995–1,295/month at reported INR pricing — verify at checkout). Unlocks 2 charts/tab, 5 indicators, 10K bars, 180 days of minute data, 20 alerts, webhooks, Bar Replay, volume profile.
  2. Screener.in Active Investor: ₹4,999/year (~₹417/month).
  3. Sensibull Pro only if your broker doesn't include it free (~₹800/month list — verify; Zerodha users report it free).
  4. Broker account as in the free stack.

Indicative total: ~$12.95/month + ~₹417/month (₹0 extra if Sensibull is free via your broker) — roughly ₹1,400–2,100/month all-in at reported INR pricing. Do not buy Plus/Premium until Essential's limits actually bind you (you regularly need 4+ charts, 10+ indicators, or 100+ alerts). Ultimate is overkill for retail use.

Multi-timeframe chart layout — step by step

  1. Open a 2-chart layout (Essential) or use two browser tabs (free): left = higher timeframe, right = trading timeframe.
  2. Left chart: Daily — draw the trend (higher highs/lows or the reverse), mark 2–3 key support/resistance zones, add 50/200 EMA. This chart decides whether you trade the name today and in which direction.
  3. Right chart: 1-hour (swing) or 15-minute (intraday) — add VWAP (intraday) or 20 EMA, volume bars, and your entry trigger. This chart decides when.
  4. Optional third pane (Plus / broker multi-layout): Weekly for the structural trend, checked once — it overrides both lower timeframes on conflict.
  5. Save as a template (indicator set) and a layout (timeframes + symbols), so every symbol you open inherits the same view. Consistency of layout is what makes multi-timeframe analysis fast.
  6. Set two alerts: one at the daily zone boundary (price alert), one on your trigger condition (technical alert). Both server-side; they fire with the app closed.
  7. Rule: never trade against the daily trend on the 15-minute chart without writing down why — the journal entry is the discipline mechanism.

Honest comparison — weaknesses, not just features
